What’s on the Menu? Food hygiene certificate ratings

Back in November 2016, new regulations came into force in Wales meaning that all takeaways are required, by law, to display food hygiene ratings.
The regulations will not force takeaways to print their food hygiene rating on any leaflets or menus that are given to members of the public, but they will need to print a bilingual statement pointing to a website where it can be found.

The following bilingual statement must be included:

“Ewch i food.gov.uk/ratings i ganfod sgôr hylendid bwyd ein busnes neu gofynnwch inni beth yw ein sgôr hylendid bwyd wrth archebu./ Go to food.gov.uk/ratings to find out the food hygiene rating of our business or ask us for our food hygiene rating when you order.”

Can you also display your rating on leaflets of menus?

Of course! However, if you do choose to display the rating, it must be current and in the format set out below:

The rating must be displayed in an obvious place on the materials, and if more than one premises is being promoted, owners must make it clear which business relates to which rating.

What happens if establishments fail to display the statement?

Put simply, they will be fined £200, with a reduction to £150 for early payment.

How are venues scored and marked when it comes to food hygiene?

Outlets are rated according to how they prepare, cook and store food, the condition of their premises, and food safety management.

The ratings are set by local councils.

So what should you do if you want to know how your favourite takeaway scores when it comes to food hygiene ratings? The FSA have a great search tool that allows you to view the ratings for local businesses in your area that serve and prepare food - http://ratings.food.gov.uk/

The search tool details the date of the last inspection and confirms the rating the business was given.
