What is expected from you?

Schools and higher education institutions now have a legal duty to have;

‘due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism’.

What does that mean?

It means you have to understand and deliver what the government is calling ‘the Prevent duty’.

What is the Prevent duty?

It’s one of the four P’s of the government’s counter-terrorist strategy ‘CONTEST’ which was introduced after the events of 9/11.

These are:

  • Prepare for attacks
  • Protect the public
  • Pursue the attackers
  • Prevent radicalisation

What does the Prevent duty mean to schools?

In the education sector you must ensure you and your staff are fully trained and understand what radicalisation means, what makes people vulnerable to it, how to help prevent it and what to do if you suspect it’s taking place.

We’ve put together a series of straightforward guides that contain what you need to know for your specific sector:

Prevent duty guidance for schools and childcare providers 2015

Prevent duty guidance for further education 2015

Prevent duty guidance for higher education 2015

What to do in an emergency

If you have serious concerns about an Individual always dial 999.

There is also a government anti-terrorist hotline 0800 789 321 and a confidential online form which can be found here.

For more information on the actions to take and when you and your staff should be taking them, complete our prevention of radicalisation training now.
