PPE Myths

Why is PPE important?

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is equipment that will protect the user against health or safety risks at work. It can include items such as helmets, gloves, goggles (or other eye protection), high-visibility clothing, safety footwear and safety harnesses. It also includes respiratory protective equipment (RPE).

PPE should be used when all other measures are inadequate to control exposure. Remember – however – it protects only the wearer and only whilst it’s being worn. If it fails, PPE offers no protection at all.

The fact and the fiction

There can be some grey areas when it comes to PPE and who is responsible for what, but have no fear – once again – flick are here to sort the fact from the fiction and ensure you stay safe out there! After all – who doesn’t want an excuse to jump into a hazmat suit, or don that glorious face shield?!

So, without any further ado, let’s get into this!

“Cleaning my PPE isn’t really important.”

flick’s verdict – Fiction.

Cleaning your PPE is a must! After every use, your PPE must be properly cleaned according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If your PPE is damaged, it won’t function as it’s supposed to, leaving you or your employees open to injury and health hazards. Any damaged or worn out PPE must be reported immediately, and as the manager or responsible person – it’s up to you to replace it.

“As long as I wear PPE, I’ll be kept safe.”

flick’s verdict – Fiction.

Wearing the correct PPE for the job or task you are carrying out is only the first step. PPE will only protect you if you’re wearing it correctly and according to the manufacturers' guidelines (let’s face it, goggles aren’t going to protect your eyes if they’re on top of your head – are they?). Ensuring all of your staff are trained how to use the PPE correctly will reduce misuse, and ultimately prevent unnecessary accidents. You also need to ensure the equipment hasn’t exceeded its expiration date, because expired PPE is about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

“My PPE needs to be stored in a suitable place.”

flick’s verdict – Fact.

All PPE must be properly looked after – and this includes storing it correctly when it’s not being used. A dry, clean cupboard is perfect for this! This will ensure your PPE is kept clean and in good condition, and avoid unnecessary costs from having to replace poorly stored equipment (let’s face it, no-one likes to shell out for things if we can avoid it).

“If it’s a quick job, there’s no point in me wearing my PPE.”

flick’s verdict – Fiction.

Never allow exemptions from wearing PPE. Accidents don’t have a time limit, all it takes is a second for something to go wrong and an accident to occur. Your employees not wearing the necessary PPE in a hazardous environment can put their life or health at risk, and it’s your responsibility to keep them safe.

“If my employees don’t want to wear PPE, I can’t make them.”

flick’s verdict – Fiction.

As an employer or responsible person, if you have deemed it necessary that PPE is required for a task, it must be worn. Encourage good practice by getting your employees involved! Allowing them to ‘sample’ different products (we’d encourage a PPE fashion show) and choose the equipment they want to wear is a great way of involving them and creating a positive attitude towards PPE. When employees find PPE comfortable they are far more likely to wear it. Remember to always lead by example and wear your correct safety equipment too!

“flick learning covers all the training you need.”

flick’s verdict – Fact!
