Nannies - outdated child protection training and a DBS check will no longer cut it

With the price of sending a child to nursery part-time sky-rocketing to an average of £116.77 per week in Britain, more and more families are looking for other options.

That’s where nannies come in. But not just you: there are more and more au-pair and nannying agencies popping up all over the UK fighting for the same jobs as you, so how are you going to stand out from the crowd?

Of course, all childcare providers must have a level-2 child safeguarding certificate, a clear DBS check and food hygiene training, but is that enough? In short – no.

What do parents look for with a new nanny?

Parents no longer want just the basics for their children. Some expect a trilingual, elephant-riding, rocket-ship-flying, super-nanny-extraordinaire.

Fortunately, not all parents are looking for a magical Mary Poppins though. For most, what they want in a new nanny is the reassurance that their precious ones will be cared for by a skilled, and trained professional; so, having a portfolio of the most up-to-date training records, in as many areas of safeguarding, childcare and development, and health and safety as possible will score high.

So what is there after child protection and a DBS check?

With more than 30 years’ of combined work in the education and childcare sector, we at flick have had a good old think about what it is that you NEED to stand out from the crowd, and we've packaged it up nicely into one, affordable training subscription.

It includes:

Child protection training -

that is fully up to date and includes new guidance and law

Food hygiene training -

so baby Dorothy can eat her meals without the risk of food poisoning

EYFS training -

childcarers need to know exactly what development milestones the children they care for should be at and how to support them.

Lone worker training -

so that nannies know how to handle any situation when in or out of the family's home – and how to stay safe, and in contact with the agency

E-safety training -

because even tiny Timmy is on the iPad these days, watching Peppa Pig and so on. Nannies need to know about risks online, and make sure that’s all he’s watching.

FGM training -

because it’s the law to report all cases, meaning everyone needs to know the signs and what action to take should you suspect someone is at risk.

Prevention of radicalisation training is now the law -

knowing and understanding the Prevent duty for childcarers is essential, and promoting good British values and spotting the signs of radicalisation in anyone (the child, the parents or the rest of the family) has never been more important.

Domestic abuse training -

nannies have a unique insight into life behind closed doors, and it’s important they know what to look out for and what action to take should they suspect any kind of abuse or violence.

Fire safety training -

well worth knowing what to do if the chip pan goes up in flames.

These are just nine of the 35 courses on offer with a flick subscription - we’ve not even started on health and safety or manual handling...

Signing up for a flick subscription will ensure your nannies and au pairs are highly trained, compliant and up to the task – and that they stay that way. It will also give you peace of mind and keep your organisation’s reputation up there with the best.
