GDPR: what do I need to know?

As you may well have heard, the Data Protection laws in the UK are going to be changed soon.

Don’t panic! We’ve got it under control.

Why’s the law changing?

The UK’s current data protection laws are legislated under the Data Protection Act (DPA) of 1998. The problem is, though, that the DPA was written over 20 years ago, and things are very different now.

So, the DPA is going to be replaced by the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation – GDPR for short – to ensure that data protection laws across the EU are all brought up-to-date and are aligned.

When does the law change?

The GDPR will come into effect on 25 May 2018.

Who will the GDPR apply to?

It will impact any organisation that uses the personal data of EU citizens.

Erm… aren’t you forgetting Brexit?

The UK government has confirmed that Brexit will not affect the implementation of the GDPR.

Do I need to start training on this now?

The short answer is no – not yet.

…and the longer answer?

Still ‘no’, but that it’s a good idea to be aware of what the changes will entail. Therefore, flick have produced a handy quickflick guide containing everything you need to know about the changes – and it’s included for free within our current Data Protection and Data Protection in Marketing courses.

When can I start training on the GDPR then?

flick will be producing a completely new and updated Data Protection course for 2018, as well as an updated Data Protection in Marketing course, which you can use to train all of your staff in everything they need to know about the GDPR.

Both courses will be available in the flick library ahead of the new regulations coming into effect in 2018.

How do I get access to this?

Subscribing with flick offers access not only to data protection training, but to all flick courses – plus downloadable guides and resources in the flick library.

The current data protection laws of the DPA will still be applicable in the UK right up until the introduction of GDPR in May 2018, so your staff do still need to be trained in this area up until that date, and they can access our brand-new GDPR quickflick guide at the same time.
