Do you know how young people in your school are being radicalised?

Do you need to know how young people in your school are being radicalised?

Yes. The government is now demanding teachers understand the process of radicalisation by placing a duty on you to help prevent it.

Maybe you think it’s not happening in your school? That might be so, but it is not confined to inner city schools serving ethnic communities. And the expectation is on every teacher in every school to grasp the issue.

How are young people being radicalised?

Young people are being radicalised through people they meet, family and friends, but perhaps more significant is the impact of social media. Here they can connect with individual fighters, who can have a powerful impact on impressionable minds.

You can find more information on the effects from social media through our #quickflickguide here.

Jihadi Brides

Not only are boys attracted to the idea of becoming war lords and praised fighters, girls too are being lured with ideas of loving homes and husbands.

The reality

Caught up in the ideology and the promise of excitement and comradeship, many young people are simply blind to the realities of moving to Syria and the consequences of their actions. They are leaving their homes and families with little chance of returning and endangering their own lives to take part in terrorist activity such as; beheadings, crucifixions and other savage violence.

What you need to do

The government has placed the onus on teachers to understand and identify radicalisation; your staff need to be able to spot the signs and take steps to prevent it. flick’s prevention of radicalisation training can help. It covers the keys points from the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, the Prevent duty and the Prevent strategy. Click here to find out more.
