COSHH - Control of Substances Hazardous to Health

What is COSHH?

COSHH (pronounced Kosh) stands for Control of Substances Hazardous to Health, for example, substances in the workplace. Now we’re not just talking about dangerous chemicals used in factories and science labs, we’re also talking about the toilet bleach under the sink and the floor cleaner kept in the cupboard.

Obviously, a lot of COSHH is about using common sense, but considering thousands of workers are made ill each year from things such as dermatitis, asthma and cancer, it’s important that you ensure your staff have the correct training for all the tasks that they have to do whilst at work.

What do employers need to do about COSHH?

As an employer, it is your job to ensure the health and safety of your employees at work following The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

This means that you need to:

  • Carry out a COSHH risk assessments using Hazard data sheets
  • Put in place suitable controls
  • Provide the findings to all employees
  • Constantly review and revise whenever a change has been implemented
  • Ensure staff have the correct training
  • Provide the correct PPE for all staff who need it.

What will this do?

This will ensure that your staff are aware of the dangers at work, and that they know how to correctly handle any substances that are hazardous. It will also give them an understanding of the correct procedures and protective equipment they must use when carrying out a task.

To help your staff remember the important stuff, here’s a free downloadable poster for you to stick up in your staff room. Fill in the blanks to tailor it to your staff. It will serve as a handy reminder of what they need to be careful of, what protective equipment they need, and what to do in an emergency.
